Indigenous Environmental Monitoring in the Amazon: Practices, Knowledge and Global Responsibility

Opening hours / Beginning:

Thu:
4:30 pm - 7:30 pm

18 June 2026

Venue:

Museum Fünf Kontinente Maximilianstraße 42 80538 München

The Amazon region is more than ever the focus of global attention. Extreme droughts, an increase in forest fires, and the relentless (illegal) extraction of natural resources such as timber, gas, oil, and gold are having serious impacts on the region’s ecosystems and the habitats of Indigenous communities.

Against this backdrop, the latter are stepping up their local monitoring and surveillance practices, collaborating with civil society initiatives and government institutions, and adopting new digital technologies. Companies in the extractive sector are also increasingly being obligated to have their activities monitored transparently—in collaboration with indigenous communities. In their interactions with external actors, indigenous environmental guardians combine local insights with established scientific knowledge. The conference brings together diverse perspectives.

This conference is a collaborative event organized by the research project “Jaguar, Drone, Human: Indigenous Vigilance in the Amazon” (a subproject of the Collaborative Research Center “Cultures of Vigilance” (TP A 10, SFB 1369, LMU Munich), the Intercultural Communication Department at LMU Munich, and the Museum Fünf Kontinente.

The event will be held in German and Spanish. Translation will be provided. For more information, please visit the website of CRC 1369 “Cultures of Vigilance”.
